SEMINARS

During January, February, and March, presentations about shells or related nature topics are made by qualified experts, who show visuals and often display some of their "finds". They bring a breadth of knowledge and experience, so a question-and-answer session follows their program. Refreshments are served and there is an opportunity to interact with the speaker and other attendees. The presentations are free and the public is always welcome.

The club plans to hold seminars in January, February, and March 2025, in Rose Hall at the Marco Island Library, 210 S. Heathwood Drive.

January 3rd, 3:00 pm- Marine Biologist, Rebecca Mensch, MS will be giving a talk about the True Tulip. From 2017 to 2022, Rebecca raised a True Tulip at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum from hatching until its unfortunate demise in Hurricane Ian. Rebecca will share notes, observations, photographs and videos of this extraordinary snail.

February 7th, 3:00 pm-Raquel Herrera with the Rookery Bay Reserve will present “The Discovery of Rookery Bay”. The presentation will cover the history of Rookery Bay Research Reserve including how it was founded as well as the education and conservation programs in the 110,000 acre Reserve.

2025 Workshops

During season, the club conducts weekly workshops, during which members produce shell art under the direction of table leaders. The projects completed at workshops become the property of the club and are sold to raise money for scholarships and grants.

The table leaders plan projects for the season and order supplies needed to complete them. All shells and craft materials are furnished by the club, but members are responsible for bringing their own high-temperature glue gun (7/16” diameter glue sticks are provided). You may also need scissors, pliers, tweezers, wire cutters, scraping tools, Exacto knife and assorted specialty tools depending on the table at which you are working. Your table leader will tell you which tools are required.

Workshops for the 2025 Season (January-March) will be held in the Bald Eagle Room at Mackle Park on Marco on Friday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. Workshops are only open to registered members and space is limited. New and returning members must register online under the membership page of this website. If you would like to participate in the 2025 workshops, please complete the online registration. When filling out the registration form online you must indicate your first and second table preference from the drop down menu. The Club will do everything possible to accommodate everyone’s selected choices but specific table assignments are not guaranteed. In the case where too many people sign up for a particular table, it will the responsibility of the table leaders to decide who sits at their table.
